Young Scholars Program

Education First Cambodia also supports children from among the poorest families in Phnom Penh, selecting students with a strong interest in education, exceptional potential, and a support network that will allow them to continue their education through to university or vocational training. There is a particular emphasis on selecting girls, who typically do not have the same opportunities for education as boys and for whom there are increased benefits from an education – including reduced child and maternal mortality, lower birth rate, and an enhanced role for women in the community.

Education First Cambodia provides these children with a quality Cambodian education, sending them to schools that offer an education that far surpasses what they could otherwise receive, and where several of the Young Scholars finish at the top of their class and the others are also excelling. Education First Cambodia also provides its students with high-quality English classes, so that they have the skills to make it in Cambodia’s increasingly international society.

As a result of these programs, children who might otherwise end up as garbage scavengers, prostitutes, or underpaid low-skill workers have the opportunity to be educated, engaged, and productive members of Cambodian society.
