Sponsor a Woman Scholar |
How does it work? |
Studies by the World Bank and other major international organizations demonstrate that educating young women and girls is the most effective way to aid developing countries. As Lawrence Summers, former Director of the White House’s National Economic Council, put it: “Investment in girls’ education may well be the highest return investment available in the developing world.” Supporting the education of girls and young women has numerous other advantages, including increased gender equality and an enhanced role for women in society, reduced child and maternal mortality, and lower birth rates. Yet it is estimated that fewer than two cents of every international development dollar goes to girls.
When you sponsor a Woman Scholar, you support a highly talented, impoverished, female university student from a remote rural area who would not otherwise have the opportunity to get a degree. She will be from among the brightest women in the country and also among the poorest, and she will have already excelled in her studies. You will help a young woman whose family struggled so that their daughter could complete high school and start university, but are unable to continue supporting her education far from home. In addition to supporting the Woman Scholar’s studies at one of the most respected universities in Cambodia, your sponsorship will provide her with both a laptop and training in English and critical thinking. The combination of the support and skills these young women will receive as a result of your sponsorship, together with their intellect and drive, will allow the women to excel in Cambodia’s rapidly changing economy and develop their country. |
Sponsorship of a Woman Scholar requires a commitment of a $100/month donation. That covers the cost of the student’s university fees, and her room and board. The fee also includes her laptop computer, English language and computer training, and courses on topics such as current events and critical thinking. Education First Cambodia is a 501(c)(3) organization (EIN 47-1669028), and all donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law.
